How To Excel At Both
    Strategy And Execution

Is Business Model Success random or strategized?
In 2011, Google launched Google+. With its reputation for business model innovation, you’d expect another success story from Google, but Google+ never really made it. It’s easy to believe that strategic business model innovation is not particularly necessary. However, just as there are failures, there are success stories too. To create a success story, executives have to understand that business models develop organically over time, and what it takes for innovation to make an impact.

Do the old strategies still work?

Traditional product development processes are no longer fit for the digital economy. The challenges are complex and in some cases beyond control.

MIT-trained economist, Kay Plantes at identifies some of these challenges as:

    • Copycat competition: B2B organizations are out there facilitating replication of your products and services.
    • Globalization: With the internet in place, entry into any market is easier than ever.
    • Herculean buyer power: Consolidation of industry and large stores have made bulk buying easier and in general, buying power has increased.
    • Price Transparency: Customers can compare prices with just a click.
    • Loss of messaging control: Customers don’t receive product information from company sources alone. Information on products and services is available from a variety of sources that may not speak about your company favorably.

Looking at existing options and choosing the supposedly best possibility is no longer a sustainable strategy for business model development. Today’s dynamic business landscape requires a bit more.

Business Model Differentiation and Design Thinking

Forget the old ideas; differentiate your business model with strategic innovation and design thinking. Design thinking is an approach used to solve problems by keeping users at its core, creating multiple prototype solutions using different perspectives, and iteratively solving the problem in a way never done before. Innovation differentiates your proposition and puts you in a unique place in the mind of consumers, reducing competition and replication, and prepares your organization to deal with today’s dynamic business environment.

The design thinking process includes: empathizing with customer experiences and needs, defining and reframing problems with human empathy, ideation or creation of ideas from different points of view, finding new ways to solve problems, experimenting with the solutions, and finally testing the complete product using the best solutions identified.
